Anti-Science Attitudes the Last Thing US Economy Needs: Nature
Image via Salon Over the last few years, sound science has been under attack in disciplines focusing on everything from climate to vaccines. Yesterday, I excerpted an interview with a man whom many consider to be a champion of sound science -- Simon Singh deftly articulated the public relations crisis science faces in the modern age. So I thought I'd follow up on the topic today, after seeing that the esteemed scientific journal Nature publishe..

Pedal-Powered Washing Machine Gets Big Company Backing
Photo via Gizmag Bike-powered washing machines aren't a new idea; however, at least one big appliance company is backing up the idea. Haier, an large electronics company out of China, showed off a human-powered washing machine concept at IFA 2010. It's fairly simple -- an exercise bike collects energy as the person pedals, and the charging battery then powers the washing machine. Supposedly 20 minutes of work is enough to wash one load of cloth..

How California Can Save Nearly 326 Billion Gallons of Water On The Cheap
Photo via PhillipC The Pacific Institute has released a new report titled "California's Next Million Acre-Feet: Saving Water, Energy and Money that outlines the steps the state can take to come up with its next one million acre-feet of water. All of it would be relatively easy and a whole lot cheaper than trying to drum up even more fresh water out of a dried-out state -- even cheaper than surface storage projects. The steps all involve existin..

Dispatch from the Front Lines of a War on Science
Photo via Wired You may have heard of Simon Singh long before his name rose to the top of the list of those championing sound science: He'd written two bestselling books, Fermat's Enigma and the Big Bang. Despite the wide range of subject matter contained in those books, the topic that ended up casting him into controversy was much different -- a seemingly benign newspaper article about some of the pitfalls of alternative medicine. He ended up ..

Small Networks of Marine Reserves Better Than Single Large Reserves for Preserving Fish & Coral
photo: Johnny Bahru via flickr. Large marine reserves aren't working to protect fish or coral--and therefore fishermen's livelihoods in the long term--and we should collectively shift towards more small reserves with fishing allowed in between.
