New Electric Vehicle Charger: 0 to 50% in Three Minutes

In general, electric cars are portrayed as being useful for everyday, short to medium-length commutes--commutes that allow you to get you there and back in a single charge, so that you can charge your car overnight for the next day. And until now, this was about right: standard chargers require about that long for a full charge. Japanese corporation JFE Engineering just announced a new charger that may help to change this narrative. Their charger allows an electric vehicle to charge up to 50% capacity in three minutes, or 70% in five minutes. On a test run, the company sent an iMi-EV more than 80 km after a three-minute charge. This is far ahead of anything else on the market--according to JFE, other "quick" chargers currently take about half an hour to reach 80%. A five-minute charger would allow travelers to charge their cars in about the time it takes to fill a tank of gas. The chargers should start appearing in Japanese gas stations by March 2011.
